As part of the IMAGINE Project’s ongoing efforts to combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and improve infection control practices in nursing homes, we are excited to introduce a new resource: a poster emphasizing the importance of hand hygiene. This poster is one of the first tools developed to support long-term care facilities (LTCFs) in implementing effective infection prevention and control (IPC) measures. It also has a QR code linking to a quick test to check your knowledge about hand hygiene.

The Importance of Hand Hygiene in Nursing Homes

Hand hygiene is a critical component in preventing the spread of infections, including urinary tract infections (UTIs), which are commonly overdiagnosed and overtreated with antibiotics in nursing homes.

Key Moments for Hand Hygiene

There are no key moments for hand hygiene, it should be a constant and maintained throughout the day. Hand hygiene must be performed by nursing home staff before taking care of a new resident, before and after a task, when changing from unclean to a clean task, after the use of gloves,…

Hand disinfection or hand washing?

Choosing the right hand hygiene technique is also key. As a general rule, on clean and dry hands disinfection is the first choice. If hands are visibly unclean or wet, is recommended to wash hands before disinfect them.

Addressing Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections (CAUTI)

One significant risk factor for UTIs in nursing homes is the use of catheters. Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) are linked to increased morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. Implementing IPC measures, such as proper hand hygiene, can significantly reduce the incidence of CAUTI and the spread of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria. Proper hand hygiene is essential before and after inserting or manipulating catheters.

The Role of Hand Hygiene

Infections, also those caused by antimicrobial-resistant bacteria, can spread from person to person through hand-borne transmission. Therefore, improving hand hygiene by means of ensuring a good infrastructure in LTCFs (such as ensuring the availability of hand-washing sinks, antibacterial soaps and hand disinfectant) and a good practice is crucial. Our new poster aims to raise awareness and educate staff, residents, and their families about the importance of hand hygiene in preventing infections.

Download and Implement the Poster

We encourage all nursing homes to download and display this poster prominently in their facilities. By promoting hand hygiene, we can help reduce the transmission of infections and improve the overall health and well-being of residents.

Stay tuned for more updates and resources from the IMAGINE Project as we continue our efforts to combat antimicrobial resistance and enhance infection control practices in nursing homes across Europe.
