The IMAGINE Project is proud to announce the publication of its latest research paper titled, “Improving Antibiotic Use in Nursing Homes by Infection Prevention and Control and Antibiotic Stewardship (IMAGINE): Protocol for a Before-and-After Intervention and Implementation Study.” This pioneering study aims to address one of the most pressing challenges in healthcare: the misuse of antibiotics and infection control in nursing homes across Europe.
The study, which involves collaboration with healthcare professionals from 109 nursing homes across eight countries, is designed to curb healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and improve the use of antibiotics. By focusing on infection prevention and antibiotic stewardship, the IMAGINE Project hopes to make a lasting impact on the quality of care provided to nursing home residents and help combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
A Comprehensive Approach
The intervention includes a range of strategies designed to improve infection prevention and control practices, such as:
- Audits to assess current infection control and antibiotic use practices.
- Expert-led training sessions for healthcare staff.
- Tailored educational materials for nursing home residents, staff, and families.
The study will closely monitor changes in infection rates and antibiotic use before and after the interventions, with preliminary audit results expected in Autumn 2024. Final results will be shared in 2025.

As the study progresses, the IMAGINE Project aims to highlight best practices in infection control and contribute to the global fight against antimicrobial resistance. The findings from this study have the potential to shape policies and improve healthcare standards not just in Europe, but worldwide.
